When Congress created Washington Territory in 1853, the new
territory included not only what is now Washington state, but all of
Idaho and chunks of Montana and Wyoming. Only four thousand
people inhabited that huge expanse, living in isolated communities
scattered around Puget Sound and various waterways west and east
of the Cascades. Once a degree of stability was achieved,
church-minded people here became interested in promoting home
missions- to maintain a cultural tie with the eastern states, ... To
